Taylor Swift – THE Artist of Our Generation?

Written by Andreea Paraluta

We all know and recognise the impact Taylor Swift has had on our generation and the current music industry – but has her time come to an end?

On the 3rd of October, Taylor Swift released her latest album titled ‘The Life of a Showgirl‘. As we all expected, the album was greatly anticipated. Fans had sky-high expectations, but when the album dropped, the reaction was anything but what anyone expected. The backlash? Unprecedented — even Swifties are questioning the album’s quality, which is unheard of for Taylor Swift! The disappointment? Real. And yes, Swifties are talking. Listeners have flooded social media all week — and trust me, they are not holding back. One user on ‘X’ has actually stated: “Taylor Swift’s downfall is starting any time now…” which highlights how significantly this album has affected Taylor’s usually untouchable reputation

The main criticism has been her ‘atrocious’ songwriting, which really took Swifties by surprise, as Taylor has been known as ‘the lyricist of our generation’. The song that is particularly getting most hate is called “CANCELLED“, now infamous for the lyric ‘Did you girlboss too close to the sun’, which has quickly become a meme on the internet. What people don’t know, although the lyric could be considered bad, Taylor is actually referencing something Candace Owens said about her.

In January 2025, Candace posted a podcast where she was discussing Taylor Swift and her best friend’s Blake Lively, controversy (which we will touch on). Owens claimed that Lively’s and Baldoni’s legal battle would “come to be known as the girlbosses who flew too close to the sun.”. Fans are speculating that the song ‘CANCELLED‘ is about her ex-best friend, Blake Lively, and the recent controversy. How true this is, we still don’t know, but a few lyrics from the track do point us in the direction to believe so: ‘

Good thing I like my friends cancelled

…..

At least you know exactly who your friends are
They’re the ones with matching scars

LOS ANGELES – MAY 19: Taylor Swift with her 8 awards in the press room at the Billboard Music Awards 2013 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 19, 2013 in Las Vegas, NV

These lyrics seem to directly mirror the speculation around the two best friends’ supposed fallout, hinting at betrayal, industry pressure, and the tough connections between friendship and fame. While neither of them has publicly addressed the situation, the song’s tone does hint at something more personal, rather than just a performative feud.

But the real question is – has Taylor Swift lost her star power, or is she simply maturing? And will she come back after this backlash?

Let’s be real, Taylor will always have a massive fanbase, and she will always be important in the music industry; there is no denying that. However, she and her team really do need to create a plan on how to move past this situation… and they need to act fast; this won’t fix itself. In an interview on The Zane Lowe Show, the artist has addressed the situation, stating: “I welcome the chaos. The rule of showbusiness is if it’s the first week of my album’s release, and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping”, which definitely was not appreciated by the public (and honestly, we can see why).

Fans are either laughing, crying, or already making TikToks about it. Although she intended to sound confident, the quote came across as dismissive, feeding the perception that Taylor is out of touch with her audience.

In my opinion, the time for Taylor Swift has come to change her branding, or at least slightly adjust it. Since her 2006 debut, Taylor has maintained a ‘girl-next-door’ image, relatable, approachable, but not exactly the brand of a billionaire. I’d suggest she focus on maturing her lyrics, especially now that she will be getting married to her fiancé, Travis Kelce, and how her fanbase has grown up with her, with most of them already having started their families. Her songs could include lyrics about resilience and reflection on her long-lived stardom. She has been compared to Beyonce and Adele, and how they were writing mature and deeper songs than Taylor when they were even younger than her. It’s time for her to graduate from high school and college themes that once defined her early albums and embrace more mature storytelling. Furthermore, her team should consider making her overall brand more mature, not just her songwriting, as this is a 35-year-old woman we are discussing, by subtly evolving her image and styling.

Additionally, her team could highlight how she has become a major inspiration for younger artists, which could be used to counter the rumour that Taylor sued Olivia Rodrigo after saying that her song was inspired by an older song of Taylor’s.

This is just the start of her transition. Other female artists her age are already more mature and respected – Taylor needs to evolve to shift public perception of her artistry. If she successfully repositions herself as a reflective, legacy artist rather than a relatable pop idol, Taylor could reclaim her credibility and redefine what longevity in pop music looks like.

Whether this marks the start of a decline or simply another reinvention, Taylor Swift’s impact on modern music remains undeniable – but even icons must evolve.

What do you think, is Taylor Swift reinventing herself, or are we witnessing a decline? Let me know in the comments!
